The First Day of the Rest of My Life

The First Day of the Rest of My Life

“This is first day of the rest of your life.” I don’t know who coined this phrase but I believe that the intention behind it is that you should forget about yesterday and look forward to the future with anticipation and excitement. Well today is truly the first day of the rest of my life. I have worked nights for over 15 years now and I am typically up late and I sleep in late, if I have the chance. Today is my first day as a work from home dad. I got up at 6:30 and headed off to the gym. I got back in time to see my wife off to work and feed Ty breakfast.

So this is what it’s like to get up and get the day started early. I like it so far. The best part was waiting for Ty to wake up. I heard him stirring when I got in from the gym so I went and watched him wake up. It was about a 5 minute process which included several stretches and yawns. He finally realized how hungry he was and began to whimper a little. One of the most exciting things was the fact that he slept for 8 hours last night! 8 hours! Now that I’m not getting in at midnight or later he decides to sleep for 8 hours. We’ll see if this is just a fluke or if this is the new trend.

Lindsay got excited last night when she realized that I was going to be home for bath time every night. She says it’s her favorite time of the day. Ty really enjoys his baths. We have his little tub on our bathroom counter next to our mirror. As soon as he gets in the water he looks for his “friend.” He stares at his reflections in the mirror the entire time he’s taking his bath. He really enjoys the water and doesn’t ever seem to mind getting scrubbed down a little.

So here’s to my new life and the challenges I’m sure that will come. For now I’ll cherish it and try to make every moment count. Even getting up at 6:30, instead of coming home at midnight.
