Building an online platform is hard work, like any business. But the good news is that there is a wealth of great information from people who’ve already done it. And one of the best places to learn is at conferences, such as Jeff Goins’ Tribe Conference, which I attended recently. Here are some of my key takeaways.
Have you ever had a job you hated? I mean REALLY hated? Are you in you in it now? Well in today’s episode, we’re going to talk about how to leave a job you hate using the power of a great network.
In today’s episode, our guest and I talk about:
- Power of building a network
- How to use projects to change your life and world
- How to get out of a job you hate
Take a moment to answer this question: Who have you always wanted to connect with? It’s probably someone you admire like your favorite author, entrepreneur, or business leader. The problem is that those people are very difficult to connect with…until you know how.
We all have people we look up to and wish we could connect with. We read all their books, watch all their speeches, follow them on social media. and listen to every interview they give. We know their stories and we feel a connection to them.
But the question remains…how do we connect with them?
Let’s get this right out of the way: The amazing, crucial, and top secret key to building relationships with the VIPs and influencers in the world is this…you introduce yourself. Blog post over. Wisdom dropped. Lives changed. Commence with the rest of your day.
But seriously, that is the key. It’s the hurdle most people aren’t willing to jump over. They aren’t willing to stick their neck out, risk rejection or possible embarrassment (which is rarely the result) and try to connect with someone who could change their lives.
My own struggle
I struggled with those fears for years. Even today, when I am about to hit send on an email or pick up the phone to call someone I admire, I am like a 13-year old boy calling a girl to ask her on his first date.
How is having a powerful network like being able to skip the lines at the movies? Well, today’s guest knows better than most, because that’s exactly what he gets to do.
In this episode, we have our first return guest, Mark Sieverkropp, and he’s here to tell you how you can skip the lines of life, just like at the movies.
Plus, we’ll talk the upcoming Networking with Purpose LIVE event. There’s still time to register, so click here to sign-up. Mark and I preview some of the topics of the event and discuss a few of the most asked questions we’ve received about the event.
Have you ever worked in an environment so toxic, you just knew you had to get out? But you couldn’t get out…because you needed the job. I’ve been there. Most people have. But there is something you can do about it.
Have you ever said, “I can’t afford to lose this job.” You stayed in a job you hate and it made you absolutely miserable. Maybe that describes you right now. Well, if that is you, I’m here to help.
The fact is that when you are stuck in a job you hate, it is almost impossible to fulfill your purpose and do what you’ve been called to do.
Today we’re going to talk about networking. No, not the kind of networking you might be thinking of. The kind where you all stand around and that one guy, who’s always overdressed comes up and the first thing he does is slides a business card in your hand and starts talking about himself. Not that kind. I’m talking about the kind of networking where you intentionally build relationships with others and who you can benefit…and maybe they might even benefit you someday.
I’ll share with you today 10 simple strategies for building a powerful network you can USE (yes its ok to use your network) that you can use when you need it most.
The old saying goes: “It’s not what you know, but who you know.”
Strike that…it’s not who you know, but how well you know them.
I remember the day I woke up and realized we had 50+ people working for us. It seemed like only yesterday there were just four of us doing it all. How did we get here? I asked myself. The answer boiled down to two simple words: Attitude and Connections.
What did attitude and connections have to do with our success? I’ll share two facts and two stories that will show you.
The Right Attitude
By my count, seven of the people we hired at our business came as a result of meeting them elsewhere. The courteous cell phone salesperson, the waiter who went above and beyond the call of duty, or the daycare worker who had an infectious smile.
They had no experience in our industry, but they had the right attitude.
There are greater problems in the world, you know, but first start with the world you know. That’s the mantra of today’s guest, who is truly changing not only his world, but the world of others around him.
Today’s guest is truly an ambassador. He is a networker extraordinaire who will show you what it means to build your own brand, even when you work for someone else. He’ll share some ways that he has built a powerful network and how to start changing the world by changing the world you know.
I hear the same complaint over and over again. “Matt, I have big ideas, big visions, and big goals, but I don’t know the right people to help make them a reality.” Have you ever felt that way? Full of ideas, energy, and ready to change the world but you don’t have the right connections?
Based on my formal (in the form of reader surveys) and informal research (based on the sheer number of emails I get about the subject), the number one thing holding you back in 2015 is your lack of a solid network.
Not your desire.
Not your health.
Not your focus.
Not your bank account.
Not your skill or knowledge.
The number one thing holding you back is likely your connections…or lack thereof.
If that is you, my friends John Corcoran, Mark Sieverkropp, and I have the solution.
