Finding Balance in a High Demand Life

Odds are you have experienced burnout in your life. You know, those times when you wake up tired, you go to bed worn out and the rest of your waking hours are filled with anxiety, irritability and a feeling of hopelessness? Today we share Part 2 of our discussion on How to Overcome Burnout and start enjoying your life again…

Episode 097: 8 Ways to Overcome Burnout (And Enjoy Your Life Again) Part 2

Today’s episode is Part 2 of a 2-part series on How to Overcome Burnout and Enjoy Your Life Again. You can listen to Part 1 here. Today we are going to talk about the ways 5-8 to avoid burnout.

This topic is one that many people will relate to. It’s a strange, and somewhat terrifying experience when you realize the things that used to bring you so much joy are now literally sucking the life out of you.

This episode came out of a conversation that I had about a year ago with my co-host, Mark, when he was still working a full-time job and trying to build a business on the side. He was the definition of “burning the candle at both ends” and he was approaching burnout. The suggestions we talk about in this episode (and Part 1 last week) are the ways I gave Mark to overcome his feelings of burnout and enjoy his life again.

Today’s Topics

In today’s episode, we talk about ways 5-8 for overcoming burnout:

    • Family Date Night
    • Get out with just your spouse
    • Take an afternoon off
    • Talk about it with a friend

And here is the full list of 8 Ways to Overcome Burnout:

    1. Plan a week off
    2. Keep time off simple
    3. Eliminate something from your schedule
    4. Create a daily family ritual
    5. Family Date Night
    6. Get out with just your spouse
    7. Take an afternoon off
    8. Talk about it with a friend

The Hidden Danger of Playing the Blame Game

Why We Do It...and How to Stop

For 36 years, I blamed someone or something else for most of my problems. For a brief moment in time, when things went wrong, it felt good to pass the buck. It was a relief to blame others and not take responsibility for my problems. Here’s what it got me…

The Hidden Danger of Playing the Blame Game

Nothing.

That’s it. It got me nothing. It led me nowhere.

Why We Play the Blame Game

But it was so easy, though. And that is why we play the blame game. It feels easier in the moment.

Why Stress Can Actually Be Good for You

Almost a decade ago, my boss at the time said something about me that changed my life. “Matt thrives in chaos,” he said. “When others are paralyzed by the stress to the point of inaction, Matt is focused and gets results.” That one statement forever altered the way I look at stressful events.

Why Stress Can Actually Be Good for You

His words came shortly after a particularly stressful 48 hours in our company. Our only server had crashed and for the next two days, our developers, my boss and I survived on virtually no sleep. There was no guarantee that we’d recover the data from that server. Second guessing and finger pointing were in abundance.

It didn’t feel like it at the time, but I was in my comfort zone. I was standing out as a leader.

5 More Reasons Why Entrepreneurs Live Longer

Why do entrepreneurs live nearly six years longer than the rest of the population?

Yesterday I shared the number one reason why: control. Despite the stress of “going it alone” and the perceived risk entrepreneurs take (the reality is that entrepreneurship is the least risky career path), entrepreneurs are in control. Or at least they feel in control, and that is what matters most according to the research.

But what are some other reasons why entrepreneurs live 7.47% longer than everyone else? Here are five.

5 more reasons why entrepreneurs live longer

1. Freedom

This moment made possible by entrepreneurial freedom.

When I worked for any of my previous companies (including my dad), I always had a schedule. That schedule didn’t change because someone (even someone as cute as our daughter) asked me to do something.

The #1 Reason Why Entrepreneurs Live Longer

Did you know that entrepreneurs live 7.47% longer than the rest of the population?

That’s nearly six full years longer! Those six years represents a healthier life, which likely represents more joy, which likely leads to better relationships, tighter family units, and so on. Those six years are very important.

But why? Why do entrepreneurs live longer?

I believe that the reason entrepreneurs live longer comes down to one word:

Control

When many people think of the prototypical entrepreneur, they get a vision of a man or woman working 16 hours a day, pulling his or her hair out from the stress of bills, payrolls, decisions, and the fact that everything rests on him or her.

The lives of every employee and their children are in the entrepreneurs’ hands.

Why Smart People do Dumb Things

I used to think I was pretty smart.

That is, until I found myself at the grocery store at 11:30 at night because of a carton of milk.

It turns out smart people do a lot of dumb things and there is a common reason why. I’ll explain below.

The milk

I’d just returned from a late night shopping trip. It was 11:15 at night and I was almost finished unloading the groceries when I discovered that the milk they’d sold me was expired. I immediately got into my car, despite being exhausted, and drove four miles back to the store.

All for $2.99 container of milk.

Not Just for Moms | Review of Say Goodbye to Survival Mode

Listen to this post

Exhausted. Overworked. Stressed out. Barely getting by.

All of those words could describe any of the moms in America today, married or single. That’s who Crystal Paine wrote her latest book, Say Goodbye to Survival Mode, for.

But it’s not just for moms! I’m not sure if you picked up on this, but I am a dude. But I feel all of those things I listed above…on a daily basis. And I also want to help my wife avoid them.

Goodbye Survival Mode from @MoneySavingMom is not just for moms. Men, you need to read this book! (Tweet That) | Share this Video on Pinterest | Share on Facebook

I had the opportunity to read an advanced copy of the book and absolutely loved it. LOVED it.

My advice to all the moms:

Get this book. Devour it. Share it with your husband, friends, and co-workers.

My advice to all the dads/husbands:

Get this book. Devour it. Think of ways to help your spouse. Share it with your daughters and sons and their spouses.

All-Natural Way to Beat the Cold or Flu | Winter Health

Leaders and high performers can’t afford to get sick.

Yet, with cold and flu season in full swing, we need to be prepared to avoid it and beat it if needed.

Almost every year, I find myself with the beginnings of some sort of sickness. Just last week, I woke up Tuesday having swallowed a porcupine. In the past it usually turned into a full-blown, knock-me-out, watch-Bob-Ross-all-day nightmare.

Until I started following my new all-natural recipe for beating colds and flu.

All Natural Cold Remedy with Olive Leaf, Grapefruit Seed, and more

Now, before I continue, let me make two things clear:

1. It works very well for me, but it might not for you.

2. In case you didn’t know, I am not a doctor. If you’ve got some other stuff going on (i.e. high blood pressure, chronic bronchitis, etc.) you should still see your doctor. Also, don’t do what I suggest if you are on any long-term medicines. I don’t know what might happen.

So with those caveats out of the way, here’s what I started doing a few years ago. I have been sick approximately five times since then, about the same number of times as usual. But it has never materialized past the third day and never gotten worse than a mildly sore throat and sniffles.
