If You Only Ask – The Top Post of 2013

I could seriously watch this video every single day. One question. One risk. One brief moment in time…and Michael Pollack became famous. Why? Because he took a risk and asked to play with Billy Joel. And Billy Joel said yes.

The top post of 2013 was entitled You’ll Never Hear Yes and it’s a story that all of us could be reminded of from time to time. Enjoy.

You’ll Never Hear Yes

You’ll never hear yes if you never ask.

I’m in a New York State of Mind today because of Billy Joel and a Vanderbilt student named Michael Pollack.

Watch this video and see what happens if you only ask.

What was the worst that could happen? That Billy Joel said no. Let me ask you something…have you ever played with Billy Joel? Neither had Michael Pollack before that moment. So, that is not a risk.

Maybe he could have been discouraged by the potential of a little embarrassment? How long do you think that would last? A few days at most.

Instead, Pollack will be known for life as the guy who asked Billy Joel if he could play with him…and got to. He got to play piano for a living legend.

He traded the potential for a few moments of embarrassment or “failure” for a lifetime of memories and possibly a huge payoff.

Do something today that stretches you. Do something that has a small risk and a huge payoff. Do something that might…might just embarrass you.

I dare you. And I’m rooting for you!

What are you missing out on just because you didn’t ask?

What are you too embarrassed to try?

Who are you too reluctant to talk to?

Love this Matt. I had never seen that video. So glad that I did. I am sure that I have missed some big opportunities in my past only because I didn’t take a chance. This is a super message. No fear! What’s the worst that could happen?

    • What IS the worst that can happen? I think when we ask ourself that actual question and realize it really isn’t bad…the upside usually beats the downside 10-1 or more. Play with Billy Joel…+1000 pts. On Today Show and other shows…+1000 pts. Feel embarrassed and maybe laughed at by a few people you don’t even care about…-100 pts.

      Yep, upside wins again.

  • Such a great post. I can see why this was #1 in 2013.

  • That’s so cool. It’s amazing what happens to us when we ask.
