Replay: Overcoming Fear to Find Your Calling

What are you called to do?

What is your purpose?

What is your mission in life?

What scares you and how can it make you stronger?

Hi, this is Robby Miles’ VP of operations for Matt McWilliams. I’m filling in this week since Matt has been out sick. But instead of listening to me, I went into the podcast archives and pulled one of our most popular episodes.

We have received more positive emails about this single episode than almost all of the other episodes combined. And it may have just changed more lives than any other episode too.

This episode is short and to the point, but it cuts to the core of overcoming your biggest fear to find your CALLING. So let’s turn it over to Matt.

Matt: So a lot of people have been asking me lately about two things.

They’re calling that’s their purpose in their mission and fear. Times are scary right now. And the fear of the unknown can be crippling for some. But what if that fear could actually be your greatest ally, your most important Indicator, and the very thing that tells you exactly what you’re supposed to do.

So this will be a very different episode because we’re going to cover one thing and willing one thing only, and we’re going to cover it quickly because I believe that the times call for this.

As I said, a lot of people have been asking me about the gosh.., Matt, what should I do? What’s my calling. What’s my purpose? What’s my mission? Is it this business? Is it something else?

Yeah. I feel like maybe that’s changing because of COVID or because of the political climate or whatever. They’ve been asking me about fear. I believe they’re framing fear wrongly. To me, you need FEAR. To live a life that actually means something to do what you were born to do, to find your calling, to find that purpose, to find that mission, to find fulfillment in life, you can’t run from fear. You need to embrace fear.

My advice to anyone, and if that’s you right now, you feel like you are wandering through life. You don’t know your calling. You don’t know your purpose. You don’t even know the next right. Step.

My advice to you, stop running from fear and start running to it. Fear is not something that we should be afraid of.

President Franklin Delano Roosevelt said I believe this is an inauguration or sometime around then, said, “The only thing we have to fear is fear itself.” To me, fear the very thing crying out to you is telling you what you’re meant to do.

One of my favorite books is the war of art by Steven Pressfield, in it, he writes a quote that I’ve oft-quoted and lived by these three sentences. “Fear is an indicator. Fear tells us what we have to do. The more scared we are of work or calling, the more sure we can be that we have to do it. Fear tells us the very thing that we’re supposed to do can be scary.”

What’d you think this was going to be easy. Maybe you thought that pursuing your calling and doing work that matters finding your purpose in life. Maybe you thought that I don’t know. It’d be like riding a unicorn through a field of rainbows and lavender. I don’t know.

You thought that it would only require you to do what comes naturally. That it would always feel comfortable. That’s the lie we’ve been told. That’s the lie we’ve been told. It’s not your fault that you believe that that’s the lie that you have been told. When you find your calling, it’ll be easy. It’ll be easy. When you find it, getting there.

Getting there will terrify you, getting there will stretch you beyond limits that you didn’t even know you had, getting there will take you so far out of your comfort zone you forget you ever had one, getting there will keep you up at night, getting there. We’ll wake you up in the morning and it’ll leave you angry. It’ll leave you confused and it will leave you alone sometimes.

It will test your limits, it will test the limits of what you thought was even possible, and in the end, it will be worth it. So how do you use fear? My belief is, and I’ve seen this true in my life and in the lives of my friends and family.

Fear lies dormant in the face of mediocrity. You can tweet that one out. Haha.

Fear lies dormant in the face of mediocrity. In other words, fear’s, not prowling around looking for a man or woman who never acts on their dream. Fear doesn’t say, well, Joe’s a failure. Let’s go wreck his life, even more, let’s go make him more afraid. I mean, why would it be there? There’s nothing to hold him back from.

When fear sees potential greatness, it pounces. So whether it’s you finally decided to leave your job, or you start a business, you decide to write that email, create that course. It could be taken a course. It could be starting an exercise program, adopting a child. When you make that decision To do those things.

That’s when fear seizes you that’s when fear starts screaming at you, you’re not good enough. You don’t have the skills. You don’t have the connections. Your daddy was a nobody. And then it tells you it’s okay. You can always quit on your dreams. And it sounds like it’s saying no, no, no.

Then like the loving parent, it says, but it’s okay. You can always quit. What it’s really saying. If you listen close enough to this. You’re doing, what you’re supposed to do, this is your purpose. This is your calling. This is the very thing that will bring you the most fulfillment in life. I’m going to do everything I can to stop him. And it’s telling you that if you listen to me, fear.

When you don’t do this thing you’ve been called to do, you will never be happy. You will never find peace. You will never know joy. If you give in to me, I will. I will always remind you that you gave up. I will always remind you that you listened to me. My call to you today is don’t let your fear only. Listen to what your fear is really telling you.

It’s telling you what’s important, what matters, what will bring you peace, what will bring you joy. And it may seem scary. But the very thing it’s trying to keep you from just might be your destiny. So today embrace the fear, find your calling, find your purpose. If there is any way that we can help me and my team can help.

Let us know. What are your fears telling you? What might they be identifying as your calling? Hit us up on social media. Leave a comment on the show notes. Mattmcwilliams.com/TaG348 for this episode, I’ll leave a comment entering those questions. Now I’ll see you in the next episode.
