How to Grow Your Affiliate Program with Podcast Interviews
If you’re looking to grow your audience, boost your credibility, and build your email list in a big way, podcast interviews might just be your secret weapon. In this episode, I’m going to share exactly how I’ve landed more than 600 podcast interviews and how I turn those interviews into affiliates who became, a huge reason for, our company’s growth. Well, welcome back. I am so glad you’re here today because we’re talking about one of my absolute favorite growth strategies. One, of the biggest drivers for the success of my business.
I would say, without a doubt, this podcast has been the biggest reason for my company’s success. Probably 30 to 50% of all of our revenue is directly or indirectly attributed to this podcast. But the second biggest one has been podcast interviews. Now, I don’t mean being a host, I don’t mean doing a podcast. Like this is episode 681.
I believe my notes are right there. 681. Those 681 podcast episodes have been hugely valuable to our business. Even though they’re free, they’ve, they’ve driven a ton of business for us. I’m, not talking about being a host.
I’m talking about getting yourself booked as a guest, going on a podcast, sharing your story, sharing your message, sharing your expertise with audiences that are already there. They’re already listening, they’re already engaged. And then how does this tie into the affiliate guy? Right? How does this tie into affiliates?
Well, I want to show you how to turn those podcast interviews, how to do them, and build relationships that can turn into affiliate partnerships. Now, before we get too far into this, for those of you who don’t know, I don’t, I don’t, I barely don’t edit my podcast. Like, occasionally if, you know, if I sneeze, I’ll edit that out. There’s no reason for you to listen to that. Or if I really need a sip of water, I will edit the part where I take a sip of water out.
But, I’m going to apologize in advance. I’ve got the sniffles. I am, I’m having allergies and Just for those of you like, I love you to death. but a couple of years ago, I was going through the same thing, and I mentioned it on the podcast. And of course, I got like 25 social media messages, emails, texts, where people are like, here’s how to fix it.
I have done everything. So if it’s like a nasal rinse, a neti pot, allergy, medication, natural allergy medication, mucuna, honey, name it, I’ve done it. I’m drinking stuff right now to help me get through this episode. but I do have the sniffles, and I’m not going to edit every sniffle out. So just forewarning you that that will be the reality for this episode.
But back on track here. If you’ve never done a podcast interview before, you know, you’ve like, you’ve never been a guest on a podcast, and you’re thinking, that’s a little bit intimidating. Don’t worry. Like, this, this works. What I’m going to share today works even if you don’t know a single podcast host.
Now, I’m thankfully super well connected now. I actually get invited to be on roughly two podcasts a week. I cannot accept those all. I’m, I do now probably 30 to 35 a year. So I’m invited to roughly 100 to 150.
I accept about a third of those, you know, fourth of those, whatever, and I do them still. I become a little bit more selective. I’m now getting invited to be on podcasts, and part of that comes from doing, you know, almost 700 episodes of this show, but also from what I’m about to share. But it works even if you’ve never been on a podcast before and if you don’t know a single podcast host. In fact, when I first started, I really didn’t know anybody either.
How I got on podcasts was doing exactly what I’m about to share. This method that I’m going to walk you through today. When I did my book launch, my first book launch, Turn youn Passions Into Profits, we were able to book more than 200 interviews. 200. And it was like 220.
225 interviews. Just for my book launch, I did an average of two interviews a day for over 100 days. Most actually, if you factor it in with weekday, you know, not doing podcasts on weekends. I think I was doing like two and a half podcasts per day for almost 100 straight days. You know, 100 straight weekdays.
And like, how does that work? Because they. They release the episodes, you know, closer to book launch when we want them to release. And I mean there were days where I was doing four. I think there was even one day where I did five.
it was like I started my day with a podcast and you know, ended my day with the podcast and in between was able to get a little bit of work done. And they range like some of them were. I remember that one day when I did the one day, I remember specifically doing four, I had back to back ones, but one of them was like a 20 minute, like their time limits 20 minutes. So it was a very short one. but I did, you know, I did Kevin Miller’s, I mean we did, the way Kevin does it, you actually do three episodes with him and each one one is pretty short, you know, like a half hour.
But I mean I think we were on for three hours total. And it’s exhausting, you know, no doubt about it, but totally worth it because we sold an astronomical amount of books through podcast episodes and that’s why we’re able to make it turn it into a bestseller. And so I remember the one day just as a tip, you know, like if you’re doing a bunch of them, have your throat coat tea, you know, get throat coat tea, put in a little bit of honey when I did the four and I swear, I think I have to go look at my calendar, but I swear there was a day where I did five, but when I did the one day where I had four and three of them were long form podcasts meaning over an hour and then the one was a short one or the day when I did Kevin Miller’s and I think I had two more that day. You know, I did probably four and a half hours of podcasts that day. Yeah, throat code tea honey, those are my go to’s, Suck on a throat drop between.
But here’s a little tip. Put a Luden’s throat drop or Ricola or whatever your go to throat drop is, put it in the tea while it’s still hot and it will melt. And I am telling you right now, it is like the best thing ever. Just as a, as a little tip there. But here’s the thing.
I’ve done over, I did over 200 for my book launch. I’ve done over 600 total across the years. And let me tell you, these emails or these podcasts have been a huge driver for growing our email list. We, we sold a lot of products, massive brand credibility and you know, if you go search for my name in any podcast player, not only do you find this, but you find hundreds and hundreds of interviews. If you go YouTube, you find probably over a hundred of the interviews are on YouTube.
But most importantly, they led to long term affiliate partnerships with some amazing people. The thing about podcast hosts that you have to keep in mind is the podcast comes first. If they are a podcaster and they consider themselves a podcaster, first you have to be on the podcast, like in order to get them to promote you via email or on social media or to their, you know, to their groups, to their list. It doesn’t happen unless you’re on the podcast. So there have been some podcasts I went on, maybe the podcast only got 5 or 10,000 listens.
And you know, I know that’s a lot, but I’m saying it’s not like an astronomical amount. And we may have only sold $2,000 worth of product through the podcast or gotten the hundred subscribers through the podcast. But when I got them to send five emails, when I got them to do some social media, then we got thousands of subscribers and sold tens of thousands, sometimes $100,000 plus worth of products or services. And so the podcast comes first, that leads to more. And so that’s what we’re talking about.
Not just how to get booked on the podcast, that’s kind of part one of what we’re going to talk about, but how to turn those podcast interviews into relationships that lead to partnerships that lead to being affiliates. Now, a couple of episodes ago, I shared some of my New Year’s resolutions for affiliate managers. And one of those resolutions was to build more strategic affiliate relationships in the upcoming year. Today is the perfect follow up to that, because podcasting is exactly where some of those relationships begin. And here’s the best part.
You can do this right? Whether you’re an affiliate manager, you can do this process for your company. And, you know, maybe it’s the owner of the company or a PR person, you know, maybe it’s the author of the book who’s going to be on the show. You can do this. If you’re the business owner, you can do this yourself.
Maybe you have a VA. A, VA does, can easily do 70 to 80% of the work on this, maybe upwards of 90%. This is a repeatable, teachable process that anyone can follow. anyone can follow this. This is not that complicated.
So that’s the good news. But I’m going to walk you through how to do it here. If you want to grow your reach, if you want to build like the cool thing about it, I love about this is you spend an hour on a podcast and there is a level of trust that you cannot replicate from any number of emails or social media posts. This is a way to build trust with an audience, but also, like I said, create those affiliate partnerships that last a long time. And I’m going to show you how to do that.
So I’ve got 10 steps. I’ve used these again and again to get interviewed. These are how to get. How to actually get the interview. And then I’ve got a few steps at the end about how to turn those into lifelong partnerships.
Like I said, anyone can do this. You can do it, your affiliate manager can do it, A VA can do it. The key is to make sure you listen, take good notes, and train them. All right, step one, I want you to go to a link I’ve got in the Show Notes to a website called Listen Notes. Now I’ve got my affiliate link in the Show Notes.
If you sign up, I make like a whole $2. And then I go to Sizzler later. Ah, if enough of you sign up. But I’m going to tell you right now, this is one of my favorite tools for finding podcasts. and then ultimately for getting their information.
That’s the big reason why I like Listen Notes. So step one, go to Listen Notes. Like I said, there’s a link in the show Notes at the. I think you get like, I don’t know, something like you get like a free day or something if you use it as well. So if you use that affiliate link.
So go to Listen Notes. Step two, I want you to search for podcasts that you think you might want to be on. All right, you probably already have a few in mind. you can search by category that one of my favorite features is like the. Similar to, you know, you type in the name of a podcast or you can put in like a few podcasts and then it’ll recommend podcasts that are similar.
Now, the cool thing about this is one of the steps later is that you’re going to look to see if they actually do interviews. And in fact, that’s the next step we’ll talk about in a second. This will tend to recommend if you. If you put. If you put like five podcasts in the.
In the similar to box, right? And you. All five of them do interviews. Most of the podcasts that they’re going to recommend as being similar to these podcasts are going to be interview podcasts. Not all, but the majority of them.
Whereas if you just put in one podcast and it’s interview podcast, it doesn’t necessarily make the connection. Oh, these are all interview podcasts. Let’s go heavy on the interview podcast. So again you can put in one podcast. you can put in five, ten, whatever.
you might just go to like the rankings. There’s so many ways you can do this. But search for podcasts. My recommendation is that you know, if you know a couple of podcasts you’re like, I really think that would be a great fit. I would be a great guest on that podcast.
Go put those in the, in the similar to box and tell it to recommend podcasts. Right now that’s a paid feature. That particular thing is you can do like a free search. there are some free features on there. In fact occasionally we use the free version and I’ll explain kind of when we use that in a second but that similar to one is a, ah, is a paid feature.
So then actually I’ll just go and explain the times we use the free. So in a moment I’m going to talk about getting their contact information that is a paid feature. That’s why the paid version of Listen Notes is so valuable. things like, just like the, like a list of podcasts in a category. If you know, like hey, pretty much every podcast in the.Let’s just say you’re you know, you’re in education. So everything in the education space you would probably be interested in being on, you can get the list for free and get that information, put it in a spreadsheet and then come back and pay for it later to get their contact information. And when I talk about how to do that, you’ll see why you might want to use that strategy because it’ll save you some money. Alright, so we’re going to search for podcast either way. Step three, just take a look at their last few episodes.
Now one thing that Listen Notes will list is when they publish their last episode, if their last episode hasn’t been published in a month, well then don’t even bother adding them to the list. If they only publish like a quarterly episode, unless it’s just huge, it’s probably not worth being on. The other thing is that they have what’s known as a global rank or a listen score. And so let me pull up on the website here real quick. You know, if I’m on the website and I see their listen score is a certain number.
Don’t make the same mistakes I’ve made with my affiliate programs. Learn my top 20 affiliate program mistakes…and how to avoid them!
Now again this is an arbitrary this is an arbitrary thing. Like the global rank is top 2%. That means it’s the top 2% of all podcasts in the entire world. If the listen score is a 45, I don’t even know what that means, but at least allows you to compare website or a podcast to another podcast. Right?
And so for instance, my podcast is ranked in the top 1. 5% of the world, right? So out of 3,696,087 podcasts, it says it’s ranked in the top 1. 5%. And so I typically don’t want to be on a podcast now that’s outside of the top 2% unless it’s like an industry specific podcast in the affiliate space that might be, you know, ranked a little bit lower than mine.
And I would be on that. Right. But my barrier for some of our clients who are more famous is top 0. 5%. You know, they’re not going to be on anything that’s outside of the top point five percent for some of our smaller clients, like, I’ll go down as far as 5% if you’re starting out one of my recommendations.
If you’ve never done a podcast interview, don’t do a podcast interview in the top 1% on your first one. Do some of the smaller ones and kind of get your sea legs under you, so to speak. But you can see this and order them. And again, I recommend being on smaller podcasts to start. When I did my book launch, the first five podcasts and this is something I use with all of our clients now, the first five podcasts that I was on were purposefully smaller podcasts.
Like they were in the like 2 to 5% range in terms of rank. And so I was on some smaller ones and I kind of like, okay, yeah, I messed that up. you know what, I should have done that. And I think I shared this on an episode before, but that’s when I was on an episode. Yes, I wrote my book.
This is long before AI. So I wrote turn your passions into profits. Every word in there was written by me. And yet they asked me about the eight steps in, or the, you know, the eight steps in this one chapter. And I’m like, oh my gosh, I don’t remember what I called step five.
You know, what did I actually call it? Because I’ve been teaching these for years, but I didn’t necessarily have alliterative name for those steps and things like that. I’m like, I don’t remember step five. And I’m panicking. I’m trying to find it in the manuscript, you know, flipping through the pages.
And so I created a document that was like, 40 pages in a Google Doc that I could keep up on my screen, that had navigation on the left side of the screen that I could easily go to that if anybody asked me a question and I needed a bit of a reminder I could go to it. Or just like, even things like, okay, if they ask me about this, here’s the stories. Here’s my three core stories that I want to tell around this idea. And I didn’t have the stories written out. I know the stories, but it was like, tell the story about my dad.
Tell the story about the time, you know, the coach ran the stop sign. Tell the story about the. The woman whose audience, was parents of autistic children. And that just kind of reminded me, like, don’t, you know, like, make sure I tell that story. That’s a great story.
Use that here. And so I wouldn’t have known that if I hadn’t done those small interviews first. If my first interview had been Kevin Miller, I would have bungled that interview, because I didn’t even remember 100% of what I’d written in the book. You know, some of it had been written well over a year before I remembered 95%. But of course, I get asked about the 5%.
So that’s one thing to do there is make sure you’re on some small podcasts first. All right, so going back to step three. Review their past few episodes. If they’ve had an episode published in the past month, they’re consistently put, like, look at when they publish content. Is it consistent?
Or do they go four months without publishing? That’s not the kind of podcast you probably want to be on. There are exceptions to that rule in certain industries, but generally speaking, you probably don’t want to be on that podcast. Look at their last 10 to 15 episodes. Have they done an interview at least once in the past 10 episodes?
If not, just skip the podcast. If yes, then proceed to step four. So, again, if they’re not doing interviews, you know, if they’re not doing at least five interviews a year, you don’t want to try to be on that show. They’re like, my show. I don’t do more than.
I just interviewed Kyle Young, and before that, I interviewed Donald Miller. I think Those are the two interviews I’ve done in the past 365 days. I asked them to be on the show. Like, they were not reaching out to me and asking to be on the show. And so I reach out to a few people a year that I really want to have on, who have something amazing that I want to share with the world.
And outside of that, like, you’re not going to get interviewed by me. It’s just. That’s the reality. I get. I get pitched all the time about being on my show, and I say no, but I would.
If you follow what I’m teaching here, you would never have reached out to me. you could see, well, he’s only interviewed two people in the past year. Like, don’t. Don’t even bother to reach out to Matt. So there you go.
I mean, like, just telling you in advance, don’t reach out to me. All right, step four. We’ve established they’ve done interviews. They’ve done a couple in the past, or maybe all their stuff is interviews, or every other episode’s an interview, or at least once a month, they’re doing an interview. Roughly.
I want you to find an interview from about one to three months ago. It’s not a year plus ago, and it’s not the most recent. And the reason for this is we’re going to reach out to them. I’m going to share an email in a little bit. That’s worked for me.
We’re going to reach out to them about this episode. So if they’ve interviewed. Let’s. I’m going to make up some names here. They, they just interviewed John Smith this week and the week before, they interviewed Sally Thompson, and the week before that they interviewed Herman Edwards, Herm Edwards, I think he was like a football coach.
and the week before that, they interviewed, you know, Todd Thompson. Right. I want to reach out to them about that one. The Herman or the. The Todd one.
Right. You know, three, four, five, six weeks ago, a couple of interviews ago. Three, four, five interviews ago. Not so far in the past that it doesn’t, like, trigger with them, and not so recently that it’s like they’re just reaching to me about the most recent episode. And again, I’ve tested this, and this works.
I find an interview one to three months ago, two to four interviews ago, and then I document that. So, so far, what I’ve got on my spreadsheet is the name of the podcast, the name of the host, if you can figure that out right away, their first name in its own field, in the spreadsheet, their last name, and I’ve got the name of the person that they interviewed, whoever that person is. You know, what did I say? Todd Thompson. That’s the person they Interviewed.
I’ve got that name there, right? All right, now I’m going to listen to a little bit of the episode and I want to hear what they’re talking about. There’s a couple of reasons for this. Number one, in this email that I’m going to say, I’m going to mention that I’m listening to the episode and I want to be honest about that. Number two, is there something like, is there something about the way they do the interview?
Do I feel like in those five minutes of listening to this interview that, you know, this is somebody I could, I could be interviewed by? wow, they’re not that fun. I don’t know if, I don’t know if doing this interview is going to be the best for my brand. Like, oh, I see what they’re talking about. It’s, you know, yeah, it kind of looks like a marketing podcast, but really it’s just a bunch of guys, you know, talking about sports.
I don’t know, you know, like, that’s not really a great fit for me. So what am I, what am I getting from Those, you know, three to 10 minutes of listening to this podcast? Step six is to get their contact information. This is why a paid version of Listen Notes is so valuable. The cool thing about it, I mentioned earlier that you can like get the list for free.
You know, you can see the name of the podcast. You can see, I think in the free version, I mean, I’m logged in right now. Me log out and see. I’m pretty sure in the free version you can see global rank. So you can tell if they’re in the top, you know, percent okay, so here’s the thing.
You have to be logged in to see that. But it’s, I’m, in the free, I’m in the free login right now. I’m not even in the paid login right now because we’re not paid right now. So let me explain that. The cool thing about Listen Notes is you can get a two day pass.
So yeah, you can get a monthly pass. And I don’t know what it is. It’s like 300 bucks. But usually what I’ll have our team do is get the list of like 200 podcasts that I want to be on. And then in the spreadsheet, they’ll put a link to the Listen Notes profile of the podcast and then we’ll pay for it for two days and they’ll go boom, click, get the email copy, paste in, you know, 30 seconds per, you know, per podcast.
It Takes them an hour, hour and a half to maybe copy over 400, you know, maybe two hours to copy over 400 emails. And then we. Then we’re. Then we’re not paying for it anymore because there’s no reason to, because again, I can get everything else I need with an unpaid subscription or with an unpaid, you know, membership, so to speak. So you want to use the paid version, though, to get their email addresses makes it so easy.
Are there other ways to get the email? Yes, in fact, there are some free ways to get the email that I’ve figured out with using AI, but it is astronomically longer, like two to three minutes per email to get, you know, again, times 400, you know, we’re talking, you know, five hours versus paying 20 bucks, I think, is about what it is. and I get all of them, you know, like, super quickly. there’s even, like, you can even just download. Now, I, I choose not to do the download because I do that research to see if they’ve done interviews.
So I’m not wasting time and energy and, you know, in a sense, money, because I’m paying somebody to do this, to reach out to podcasts that are never going to interview me. so, yeah, but you can even just download spreadsheets from Listen Notes, and it’s got their email in there. So again, it makes for 20 bucks. It makes it so easy. Right.
So I believe in using the paid version. All right, that’s step six. Step seven is you’re going to contact them. Now, here’s an email that’s worked really well for me. I put the other podcast guest. That’s why we kept that. Right. I put their name in the subject line and then the word interview. So, Todd Thompson, interview. I start off the email, I mentioned the other podcast guest and how it made me think to reach out to them. Then I share what I can bring to their listeners, that this is the most important part. It should be all about their audience. Here’s what I can teach your audience. If that’s. If you’re a teacher, right, if some industries, it might not be, you’re not.
Might not go on the show to teach the, you know, the. Whatever it is. But if you, if that’s what it is, and most of you, that’s what it’s going to be, is you’re going to be teaching something here. Here’s what I can teach your audience. Here’s what I can share.
Here are three to five bullet points about what I can bring to the table and here’s how I can serve your audience in a big way. Here’s why that would be a good fit for your audience. And I tie it to that interview. I say, hey, you know, Todd talked about X and I can talk about why. And that’s the other reason why when I go back, I try to find an interview where there’s a connection between their stuff and my stuff.
So I’d rather go back eight weeks than four weeks. If, you know, they had somebody on who talked about social media marketing and I can tie that into affiliate stuff. if they interviewed somebody that I know, that’s nothing I look for. I’ll scroll through the whole list. Now, the VA can’t do this typically, but sometimes if it’s a big enough show, I’ll scroll through the list and look to see is it somebody that, I know?
Can I find somebody that I know? And that’s worked really well for me. I’ve got a much higher success rate. A, I can reach out to them and say, you know, my friend so and so was on your show a couple of weeks ago. B, I can use that to then go over and like share the episode and then get some back and forth commentary.
So I’ll go on social media and be like, hey, you know, so fun seeing my friend, you know, Timmy, whatever. on the such and such show. I’ll tag both of them and then they’ll respond to each other. Now I’m in. So again, to recap this email, let’s assume you know nobody, you don’t know the person you interviewed.
I mentioned their name, how it made me think to reach out them. I share what I can bring to their audience, all about serving their audience. And then I just close asking if they’re up for a quick chat to see if, you know, if it’d be a good fit. That’s it. It’s a pretty simple email, four to seven sentences.
If, you want the exact email, I can send you one that I’ve used. It’s worked really well for, I can send you one that my team used to reach out on my behalf about my book and then another one that I’ve used to land some interviews. just text me at 260-217-4619 and I’ll send, I’ll just copy it from my email and send it over to you. So 260-217-4619. Again, you can always text me there if you have any questions or need anything.
All right, number eight Step eight. So we send that email, they reply. You get a reply. Now they reply. There could be a few different things.
They could say, no, cool, we’ve eliminated them. Go delete them from your sheet. they could say, maybe let’s talk. Perfect, that’s what you want. They could say, yes, here’s the book, the podcast, whatever it is, you know, step eight, A, B and C are reply, have a conversation with them.
and book the podcast. Step nine. This is critical. Create an affiliate link for them. So you should know going into the episode, probably what you’re going to quote, unquote, pitch a free download, a free PDF or something like that.
I sometimes don’t know. I base it on what we end up talking about and I often don’t know. But I do know in advance that I’m going to create a URL for them. So if I’m going on, John Lee Dumas show Entrepreneurs on Fire, I’ve been on there twice. we’ve got like mattmcwilliams.com fire, you know, if I’m going on, you know, the Tom woods show, I think it’s mattmcwin’s.com Tom or Tom woods or Woods, you know, something like that. I know in advance what URL I want to create for them. I don’t necessarily have to already redirect that the episode’s not going live for days. Now if we are doing a live recording, I think two times, maybe we were live.
To get started with affiliate marketing the right way, download my free quickstart guide to affiliate marketing. Grab your copy here!
I created a link that I did pre create a link that went to a URL that had a few different things on it just in case, you know, because I was pretty confident we were gonna talk about those things. And it just said like, welcome such and such listeners and had like three, you know, paths that they could take. And then once we figured it out on the show, I just deleted the one that weren’t relevant. Redid the link, right. Using Pretty Link.
It’s A plugin for WordPress. Super easy, right? So something that their listeners will appreciate. That’s what you want to offer. A free download, a free video, a free checklist, you know, a lead magnet, basically anything like that.
And so make that an affiliate link for the podcast host. That’s the key. And then mention that, you know, step 10 is just to mention that URL a few times. Work it in naturally. Work it in naturally.
So when I’ll, give you an example with the book that was a paid book when I did the book tour and I would have passionsindtoproprofitsbook.com that’s the URL, by the way, if you want to get the book. But I would have passionsindtoproprofitsbook.com whatever. So forward, slash, Tom, John, Leo, Rory, whatever.
The name of the podcast I was on. one thing is, by the way, we tracked those, we kept those in a spreadsheet so that if I got in a pinch and forgot, like, I always had the spreadsheet there, my team did a great job of giving me if, I was going on, you know, the such and such show they would give me because again, like, I’m on four or five in a day. Sometimes I forget where I’m at. And they would just put it on a. It was a Google Doc that had a, like three lines.
The name of the podcast, the name of the host. Because believe it or not, there was one time that I remember that I forgot the podcast host name. And it. They’re, they’re, on Zoom. And the name, it wasn’t like Matt McWams.
Like, my name on Zoom is like Matt McQuilliams. Their name was like the name of the podcast. And I’m like, golly, I don’t remember. I’m like, trying to find in my calendar. And so we, after that, you know, this was like podcast 35 or whatever.
After that, they created a little thing for me. So it was like, I’m, you know, it’s Monday, January 3rd at 3pm and then name of the podcast, name of the host, name of the URL, you know, so I would have that right in front of me. Couldn’t possibly screw it up, made it easy for me. So in that case, when somebody would ask me, like, you know, they’d ask me about the book and they would say, you know, blah, blah, blah, talk about this concept in the book. I would say, this is one of my favorite ways to answer a question about the book is one of the things that annoys me is when an author goes, well, I write all about that in chapter 10.
Okay? And I’m on your show now, and I’m listening. I’m listening now. Could you give me anything? So I’ll say.
So here’s the thing. In chapter four, I actually share 10 ways that you can do that. Let me share my favorite one here, though. This is the number one way to blank. So if we’re talking about list growth, this is the number one way to grow your email list.
And I share that reason. And I say, like I said, I’ve got 10 ways we could do an entire episode on that, John. I’ve got 10 ways that you can do that in chapter four. So if you go to passionsinthoproprofitsbook. com, john, you can get that.
you can get my book right now. You, can get it anywhere. So this, like, with a book, I’ll say, you can walk into Barnes and Noble and get it. You can get it on Amazon, of course, you can go to barnesandnoble.com you can get it anywhere books are sold.
we’ve, you know, and I would tell the story about, like, you know, I actually heard the other day somebody got the book in a small bookstore in Ontario, Canada, which was cool. I didn’t even know that Canada had books, you know, something funny like that. But I would say if you go to passionsintheprophetsbook.com, john, which, by the way, I don’t know if that’s a real URL, just as a side note for you who are listening right now, but if you go there, I’ve got some special bonuses for your listeners, John, so make sure you go to that URL to get it. And I’ll mention that two to three times in the episode.
Now, if it’s a free something, let’s say we’re talking about recruiting affiliates, then, you know, I’ll mention, you know, let’s say, let’s say we’re giving away, the, the free report that I have, your First 100 affiliates, which, by the way, you can find@mattmcwiams.com First 100. And. But I’m going to do like, you know, go to mattmcwaims. com John and so we’re talking about recruiting affiliates.
I’m saying, he’s like, where are the best places to find affiliates? I’ll say, hey, I’ve actually got a free report for your audience, John. and I’ll tell you where they can get that in a moment. M. I’ve got 15 places there where they can, like the best places to find affiliates.
I’ve got some sample email templates and all that, but let me share my two favorite ways to find affiliates. Number one, blah, blah, blah. Number two, right? And I’ll share my two favorite ways. I’ll say, again, we could do an entire podcast episode about all 15 ways, but if you want to go grab that report, it’s @mattmcwilliams.com John and that’s. I’ll work that in a couple of times. So then maybe later they’re saying, you know, they asked me a question like, have you ever worked with nonprofits as affiliates? As a matter of fact, I mentioned that free report earlier and again, you can get that@mattmcwaims.com John.
And in that report I talk about how to work with nonprofits as affiliates. So let me give you a quick overview of how that works and then I’ll share the overview. And again, you can learn more about that @mattmcgainage.com John, that link, it’s a free report, right? So like, how does the affiliate make money?
Well, number one, it goes into a funnel and people can buy stuff in that funnel and John makes money. Number two, they’re cookied and if they buy something three months later, there’s a pretty good chance John’s going to get a commission. So now John is making money from that podcast interview that he did with me. So that’s the 10 steps gets you from finding the podcast, identifying if they’re a good fit, if you should even be reaching out to them, to actually booking the show, being on the show, doing the interview, mentioning that pretty link URL. Let’s talk a little bit about what to do after the interview.
How do we turn them into longer, term affiliates? So we’ve made them a short term affiliate just by creating that affiliate link. They’re an affiliate now. they have the pretty link and that’s good for promoting that thing. Right.
Which is great. But after the interview, what I want to do is I want to really deepen the relationship. I want to turn them into somebody who doesn’t just do a podcast interview with me and then we’re done. I want to turn them into somebody who can do a webinar with me, can host me on their YouTube channel, can send an email, or 5 or 7 can promote one of our big launches. Who will promote our next thing and our next thing and our next thing and could become, you know, again.
I’ve had some of these podcast interviews that have turned into well into six figure relationships both ways. And so here’s three things, very simple things that I do that really help with this. The first is like when the episode goes live, share it. When you’re on somebody else’s show, share it with your audience. Make sure you tag them.
So great to join Omwoods on his podcast this week. You know, listen here. Right. a lot of times when I do a podcast interview, I’ll take a screenshot of us doing the Zoom interview, so that I can use that on social Media. if it’s a big enough show, I’ll send an email about it.
Now, there’s two reasons why I do that. Number one is to give them some traffic. Makes it look a lot of times they’re on my email list, so that looks good as well. Number two, I can kind of forward that email. If I get any email replies, I.
I can forward those. I’m, gonna talk about that in a second, but I can forward them and they’re like, oh, my gosh, you sent an email about being on my show. number. The other reason is if I want a big enough show, it kind of makes me look good, let’s be honest. So I like to share.
Like, oh, my gosh. I was on this show that has 1. 2 million monthly downloads, and it’s a great show and you should listen to it. And I’m a guest. Like, yay me.
M. I know it sounds weird, but that’s, you know, that’s what I do, right? That’s what we all do. And, we’re building our brand, and that’s part of building your brand. So share the episode.
Make sure that it’s one of their most popular episodes this month or this quarter or this year. And so again, if I mention it on social media and I, you know, tag them and then somebody replies. Now that person seeing the replies, and they’re like, wow, that’s a lot of engagement. Like, I’m getting engagement from this. And they see the email and then they look at the stats and it’s like, wow.
You know, when I look at my episodes for the first quarter of this year, my most popular episode was my interview with Matt McWilliams. That’s a good thing. So I share it four to six times in the first two weeks, like basically every third day, for about, you know, two weeks. And then I add it to the queue. We, use a program called Meet Edgar, which, you know, I can put a link to that in the show notes.
so we use a program called Meet Edgar for our social media, and that just allows us to literally upload thousands of social media posts and then it sends them out on a schedule. And so, it’s kind of like the, the rotisserie cooker, right? You set it and forget it. And so If I load 100 social media posts, for example, about this podcast, they’ll go out every one to three months. There’s no exact rhythm.
It’s not like it’s going to go out exactly every 49 days. No it might go out. Two of them might go out in the same month, and then it might go two months without going out. But there’s some sort of consistency in terms of they’re going out with some frequency but not too frequent. And.
And one of the best examples of, like, the impact that this has made was, my friend Joe Fear. When I was on his show, I think it was on his show for the third time, and the reason I got on a third time was he reached out to me. You know, this is a pretty big show. A, show that’s gotten us, you know, I wouldn’t say like hundreds of thousands of dollars in revenue, but thousands to tens of thousands, you know, from the first two. And he was like, man, you know, I just, I’m on Twitter, you know, as it was known back then.
And he was like, it just seems like, you know, every couple of months you’re mentioning the episode and I’m getting, you know, listeners and I’m seeing engagement and a couple of people are responding and he’s like, so I, you know, I’m gonna. He’s like, I’m reward that. So make sure that you set it on some sort of an auto share. It’s different if it’s like the book launch. With the book launch, I would share it more heavily in the first month to six weeks, and then maybe not at all.
Just kind of depends on whether it makes sense. But most interviews are going to be pretty evergreen and just make sure that you’re, you know, you’re tagging them once every couple of months or so. If, you do it manually, that’s fine. I just like to do meet Edgar, because I will be mentioning a podcast that I was on in 2021, I’m going to be mentioning it in 2034 through Edgar without having to do any work. And I kind of like that.
so again, make sure you’re sharing the episode. The second thing is, if you get comments, if you get emails, obviously if they tag the other person, you know, that that’s done. They’ve seen it maybe, but make sure you respond to that. You know, make sure you keep the conversation going. If you get an email from somebody that’s really good, like, hey, I loved your interview, you know, that you did on John show.
Forward that to John and share it with them. You know, if you get a private, if you get a DM or a text or whatever, make sure that you’re sharing that with the podcast host. And then the third thing, basic affiliate management here is congratulate them when they make sales. They may have forgotten that you made an affiliate link for them. Make sure, by the way, you tell them that after the show real quick, like, hey, by the way, that, you know, mattmcwilliams.com John, that’s an affiliate link for you. So make sure when they make sales that you tell them like, congratulate them on making the sale. You know, let them know they earned money. Doesn’t have to be super, you know, intense, like a long email, just a quick congrats email. Again, don’t congratulate them on every sale, but definitely congratulate them on their first one.
And depending upon when the second one is, you know, maybe their second one and then maybe, you know, when they have their 10th or when they hit a certain threshold, wow, you’ve earned 500 bucks. You’ve earned a thousand dollars, whatever it is. Again, if they make 17 sales in the first day, don’t congratulate them on, you know, four different milestones in the first day. But just use your common sense on that. So again, share the episode, continue to share the episode, share comments and congratulate them on their sales.
Alright, quick recap here. Number one, podcast interviews, I’m gonna tell you right now, are one of the most underrated tools for growing an affiliate program. Almost nobody is using them. I’ve used them to again, massive exposure. We’ve grown our list.
I mean, I would say we have tens of thousands of subscribers who’ve come in through podcasts, affiliate partnerships that are still thriving. I mean, people, gosh, I’ve got one. I specifically remember that I was on his show in 2016. He still, to this day, he’s our number one affiliate and somebody that I’m in contact with quite a bit. And we’ve done a lot of business together.
Again, you don’t need a giant following. You don’t need, you know, special connections. I didn’t have those. You just need the right process and now you’ve got it. You just got to put in the work.
Like the thing is, I have shown you how to do it, and yet, unfortunately, I’m gonna m call you out here. Dear listener, 95% of you aren’t gonna do it. 95% of the people listening to this will not do it. Don’t let that be you, because this is a, this is a process that works. If you want the exact email that I’ve used to literally land hundreds of interviews, just text me at 260-217-461,9 and I’ll shoot it over to you now.
Next week’s episode is a big one. In fact, it might be the most important episode I have done since before COVID And the question that I’m answering next week is AI the end of affiliate marketing. This is a question that I have been getting every single day. I have been. I’ve been hearing it constantly at events on the Mastermind Call.
I literally was just on a call today and got this question. That’s why I decided to do this. As the next episode was, I’m like, oh, my gosh, I’m gonna ask this question so many dagum times in the last three months, I’ve got to actually talk about it. my inbox, text, whatever. Some people are panicked.
Some people are really excited. Most are just confused. They just don’t know where affiliate marketing is heading with all this. So we’re gonna unpack all of that next week. Whether AI is a threat or maybe it’s the biggest opportunity we’ve seen since, I don’t know, the advent of affiliate marketing.
Either way, you don’t want to miss it. So make sure you are subscribed. Make sure you’re subscribed so you don’t miss that episode. And if you know someone who wants to be on podcasts or you think they should hear this episode, make sure you share it with them and then they get the next episode as well. So tell them to listen and subscribe, because the next episode about AI being the death of affiliate marketing, I’ll give you a little spoiler alert.
It’s not the end of it. It’s just fundamentally changing everything about affiliate marketing, and that’s all. So either way, we’re going to talk about that next week. You don’t want to miss it. I’ll see you then.
Thank you so much for listening today. If you know someone who would benefit from hearing this episode, make sure to share it with them.
